· by Michael Blair, Nashville's Closets
Closets are full of clothing and boxes, and a light fixture in one sits close to all of it. That is why the closet light is one of the first things we look at when we measure for a fitted system, and why the old pull-chain bulb is the fixture we always take down. Below is what we put up instead, where it goes, and which code and permits apply to the work in Nashville. When we measure for a walk-in closet, the light goes on the drawing with the shelves.
Can a closet have a bare bulb light fixture?
In any closet we fit, we do not leave or install a bare bulb on a porcelain base with a pull chain, a pendant, or any fixture that leaves the bulb open. An incandescent bulb gets hot, it hangs close to the top shelf, and in a closet a stack of sweaters or a box eventually ends up against it.
Which fixtures may go in a closet, and how far from the shelves, is set by the electrical code, and the edition Metro Nashville enforces is the 2023 National Electrical Code, adopted with local amendments, according to Metro Codes’ list of adopted codes. If the closet in your house still has the pull-chain fixture, it is worth asking an electrician to check it against that code.
What kind of light fixture is allowed in a closet?
What we fit is a fully enclosed LED fixture, surface-mounted or recessed, with the bulb behind a lens that nothing can touch, one of the closet fixture types listed in UL Solutions’ column on closet luminaires in IAEI Magazine. The clearance it needs from the shelves and the rod depends on the type of fixture and how it is mounted, and those distances are the electrician’s to measure against the code on site, not ours to guess at in a post.
The code changed recently in Nashville. The same Metro list shows the 2024 International Residential Code adopted alongside the electrical code, and Metro’s news release on the 2024 code adoption says the ordinance applies to plans and applications submitted after July 16, 2025. In practice, we put a closet light on the ceiling over the open floor in front of the shelving, or above the door, and never over the rod.
- No bare bulbs, pull chains or pendants in a closet we fit
- A fully enclosed LED fixture, surface-mounted or recessed
- Clearance from shelves and rod measured by the electrician against the code
- The fixture over the open floor or the door, not over the rod
What actually lights a closet well
One fixture in the middle of the ceiling lights the top shelf and leaves whoever stands in the doorway in their own shadow. In a reach-in closet, we would sooner put a fixture just inside the door header, aimed back toward the clothes. In a walk-in, a few small enclosed LED fixtures spaced along the ceiling light each section, where a single centered one leaves the corners dark.
Strip lights under the shelves and along the rod put the light where the clothes are. Whether a particular strip can go inside the storage area depends on the product, not only on its being LED or low voltage, so we fit only strips their maker sells for use in closets and cabinets. The LED lighting we put on shelves, rods and inside drawers is on our accessories and lighting page. A door switch or a motion sensor settles the question of a light left on behind a closed door.
Fixing an old closet
The simplest version is taking down the pull-chain fixture and putting an enclosed LED fixture on the same box. If the box is over the rod, the light may need to move, which means a new box and a run of cable. Either way it is electrical work, and in Nashville trades permits and electrical inspections go through Metro Codes and Building Safety, so let the electrician doing it tell you whether your job needs a permit.
It is worth doing before a stack of sweaters ends up against a hot bulb, and it is easy to do at the same time as a new system, since the shelves come out anyway. If you are redoing a closet and want the light planned with it, ask us for a free estimate.

FAQ
Closet Lighting Rules and Why Bare Bulbs Are Out — questions
Is a bare bulb in a closet against code?
We treat it as a fixture to replace, and we never install one. Which fixtures are allowed in a closet is for an electrician to check against the 2023 National Electrical Code, the edition Metro Nashville has adopted with local amendments. An open bulb sits close to clothes and boxes, which is why we take it down.
How far does a closet light need to be from the shelf?
It depends on the type of fixture and whether it is surface-mounted or recessed, and the distances are set in the electrical code, so the electrician measures them on site. We plan for the light to go on the ceiling over the open floor in front of the shelving or above the door, never over the rod, which keeps it away from what is stored there.
Are LED strip lights allowed in a closet?
Some are. It depends on the product, not only on its being LED or low voltage, so we fit only strip lights their maker sells for use inside closets and cabinets. Mounted under the shelves and along the rod, they light the clothes themselves instead of the ceiling.
How do you add a light to a closet?
Have a licensed electrician do it, because a new box and a run of cable are electrical work, and in Nashville trades permits go through Metro Codes. We plan a fully enclosed LED fixture on the ceiling over the open floor or just inside the door header, never over the rod, and fit only strip lights sold for closet use.
